What A Wonderful World

灰云 发表于 2008-04-18 14:37:26

Here's a Keane cover of the classic "What a wonderful world" originally by Louis Armstrong. They performed it in a charity show. I firstly heard this song in the movie "Good morning vietnam"( a good movie by the way). The song was played sarcastically along with a scene that the vietnam villages are blowed up by American battleplanes.

Anyway, it's a beautiful song, though it's not a beautiful world, and definitely not wonderful.

What I'm not makes it what I want to be

灰云 发表于 2008-04-14 14:54:18

I talked about this quite a few times before, so I figured this time typing it in English will make this less embarrassing.

In the past Tomb-sweeping Day  holliday I met one of my friends Sun, who's lately becoming interested in the fortunetelling thing. The trick was by looking at the way I look on the face, he told about my personality, and what's my future would be like, that kind of crap. What I'm trying to say is not I actually bought any of those crap, even he profiled me kinda correctly ----he's been knowing me for like 8 years so it's that not difficult to figure out. What gets me in this is that again he reminded me as myself being a dreamer much less a doer.

I make a lot of plains, also I can say I don't make any plans at all. What I mean is that I make too many plans that i never ever carry out. Sometimes I find some execuses to turn it down, or sometimes I just totally forget about it. I know it's a really lame personality that I sometimes hate myself most. Nowadays I more and more feel being traped, I just don't know what I should do with my life, how I'm gonna spend the rest of my life (also whom to be with for what it matters). I don't know if it's because there's that thing in my life I really wanna do, and I should do at some point, which is also what I can't do. It's so frustrating, this biggest curse of my life somehow makes me what I am I'm sure. But looking at another way, I do need to put things together by myself and figure a better way out. While destined to lose something, that also makes a reason for me to make other things in my life better I guess.

The way out this, and the only way, is of course actually starting to do something, something I plan. I still don't know how to get myself on this. One of the most convenient ways is to have someone there pushing me when I need it, but having someone is exactly the most unconvenient way at the first place, sigh!

So, we'll see...

Alexander: God as a human

灰云 发表于 2008-02-25 14:42:51

Alexander was directed by Oliver Stone in 2004. As a typical epic movie, it was expected as one of those blockbusters that'll make a lot money in the box office, but it didn't. And the review for this movie back then was not quite good either.

Since then there have been three versions of DVD of the movie released, and what I'm talking about is the latest one "Alexander Revisited the final cut". I can't say how much this new version is different from the original theater version, it's almost 3 years. And I liked the theater version back then, I just bought the new version DVD to enjoy this movie better.

I can understand why most people didn't like this movie, it was basicly not quite the same as they expected it to be, neither the story or the character was. As a Epic movie, people expected to see a lot of battle scenes which they couldn't find ENOUGH in this movie. Also lots of lines of dialog might make the movie like a stage play which is boring to some audiences. And the character Alexander, Oliver Stone didn't focus on his great achievement, but his inside emotion. Alexander in this movie is not a god as he had always been worshiped, he was just an average boy became a man, he was great as a warrior, and a conqueror. He has his great ambition and dream, yet he suffered from his complicated emotion of relationshiop with his parents, and the death of father. He even questioned himself when his fellowship divided. He spent his whole life chasing his dream and glory, and made great achievements, but inside he was always a lonely man. After all, during his restless life, what he really chasing might be just love, to cover this desperate loneliness inside his heart.

Like it was said in the movie, there was titan inside every man, that's the dark part coming with us since we were born. Alexander tried to fight against this titan inside himself while conquering the world, He could beat his favourite hero Achilles in many ways, but he was always a human, he's not god.

Colin Farrell's performance in this movie was quite controversial, but I think he did a great job, he successfully made the character, a tough and sensitive hero. And the original music, scores composed by Vangelis(Chariots Of Fire, The Blade Runner) was very beautiful and powerful.

It's definitely a movie that worth your 3 and a half hours to watch.

Get LOST

灰云 发表于 2008-01-21 14:29:13

Well since the writers in hollywood are having a strike, there are not many new shows to watch lately, so I decided to pick up "Lost" which I gave up watching after I finished the second season.

About this show, while there are a lot of fans out there, there are also lots of criticism about it. Most of the reasons why people hate it is because it constantly tells lies to the audience, and then continues telling more lies to cover those lies they lied before —— well I guess you can also say that's exactly what so called MYSTERY. But does it have to be ridiculous to be mysterious? Or people just enjoy being fooled, I don't know.

I remember the first time I saw this show, the exactly first episode, while I was watching the cast, I saw the creator's name "JJ Abrams". I knew this guy before because I'd seen his most successful TV show "ALIAS" for 4 seasons, I knew exactly what this guy was good at, and then I know what kind of show this LOST might be( Actually these two shows have a lot in common, you can find some music/soundtrack in LOST was also used in ALIAS, the way they tell a story are vert similar, and the way they edit the scenes, something like that). So I gave enough patience to this new show, but after 2 seasons, I finally got pissed, I couldn't stand it any more to waste so much time of my life to watch a story, only they hadn't started telling the story at all.

So while I was watching the 3rd season, I gave it my lowest expectation, I didn't even expect them to tell me something, and surprisingly in this way, I kinda enjoyed this season. I mean I still didn't see anything significant about those flash back parts except for wasting time and making the show last longer, but the part of story on the island got much more interesting, they finally started to give some answers, well most of the answers were still about WHO, didn't explain WHY. But hey, it's LOST you are watching, you can't expect too much right?

And the season finale( the last episode of a season), I don't know what I can say. I started as expecting it very much, because the story led you there and you were just desperate to know what's happenning next. Then I got really exited when I found this episode's "flash back" is not exactly a "flash back", it happened sometime after they left the island!!!!!!!! I had to say to me, that was the most exiting scene of all three season of this show. And then I kind of got a bad feeling, I checked the video player of my comuter: EXACTLY what I was worry about, it was the last scene of this season, they were about to end this season right there!!! I didn't expect they giving me any answers, so I didn't think they can fool me any way, but they ended up not even giving the question!!! Son of a bitch!!!!( Sorry for the cuss, but that's exctly what I said when it ended)

So I don't know if I will watch the following seasons of this show, maybe I will, only when  after they finish another season and I watch it all together. There's no way I can watch this show an episode every week.

BTW, in case you don't know, here's the show ALIAS I was talking about.

BTW....again, hehe, is it just me or does anybody else find that "Desmond" is really really a cool name?

My Movies Of The Year

灰云 发表于 2007-12-11 15:40:55

Okay here I'm gonna talk about movies I've seen this year and choose some my favourite ones. All these movies are released in 2007, and most are those blockbusters, aka hollywood made trash, haha, but so what, I just love them. Besides most of those good independently made movies are newly released in fall and winter, and I just can't get to see them right now.

First of all, MY FAVOURITE MOVIE of 2007! Well that's a tough choice to make. Finally I think I can settle to two of them: "Transformers" and "Ratatouille". It's really difficult to say which one is my favourite cuz I really like these two both. To say which one is a better movie, I'd say "Ratatouille" wins, because AGAIN, Pixar has made a great movie, and not only a geat animation movie, also a great movie! They obviousely did more than make a funny cartoon, there was also well wroten script, good characters and a story that could inspire people. And I love the monolog by Peter O'Toole at the end of the movie. Also the CG technique, they just kept their position as the best. But I finally decide MY FAVOURITE MOVIE OF THE YEAR goes to "Transformers", I know there are a lot shortages of this movie that the critics can criticize about, but at the end of the day, how can we turn down such an emazingly entertaining movie. Nothing is better than grabbing a coke and sitting in the theater watching a group of robots fighting on the big screen in a hot summer afternoon. So I give my award to Michael Bay, to Optimus Prime, to Bumble Bee, to Transformers.

As the best comedy movie of the year(that I've seen), I can nominate two: "Hot Fuzz" and "Superbad". "Hot Fuzz" are from those guys who made the gloriously funny "Shaun the Dead", and this new work also deserves a bravo! Even though during the second half of the movie the story goes too ridiculous, it still can rank my top two. The producers of "Superbad" is also known as the same guys made "40-year-old virgin" and "Kocked Up"(the later was also released this summer, and got quie good reviews). This movie just reminds us another American teenage movie "American Pie",except this one is more "language-dirty" . Like all the other good comedy movies ,"Superbad" is not only successful in making people laugh, also get people think about or see something in our lives, the friendship, the growing-up, the love... and all those good things and bad things. Sometimes we need to get superbad, but just remember those good things.

And the best action movie, I also have two nominations: "Bourne Ultimatum" and "Apocalypto". I've always liked the first two Bourne movies, the third one  just kept being good and even better. This movie tells a story about a secret agent's life differently from James Bond movies. There are no fancy looking(well Matt Deamon did got voted as the sexiest man of the year but you know what I mean) or clothing or cars or hot partners, still there are assassinations, car chasing, secret identities and all those mysteries. The public reputation of "Apocalypto" was kinda ruined by its director Mel Gibson's bad behavior after drinking earlier this year, but still it doesn't change the fact this is a thrillingly awesome action movie which I highly recommend.

Ok,romantic movies. Well i didn't see many romantic movies of this year, or maybe there were not any good ones at all. This British movie "Cashback" was originally based on a Oscar winner short movie with the same title. The director shot some new scenes and edit it into a movie of 90 minutes. I don't know why I like this movie(definitely not because of those nudity scenes if that's what you wanna say), it's just something about this movie somehow got me. It's not a tragical story, but the movie is full of some kind of loneliness and a bit sadness, still it's very beautiful and romantic. Besides, the British accent is really lovely, hehe.

country music

灰云 发表于 2007-11-09 16:07:23

So I found myself listenning to James Taylor.

I mean it's not a big deal, not like I'm listenning to Li Yuchun. But I heard people kept saying "I hate country music", mostly young people, especially rocking 'n roll fans. It's like listenning to country music is something only old people do, or at least people at their middle age.

And James Taylor could make this worse, worse than Kelly Clarkson anyway. Maybe it IS supposed to be weird that a guy at  his twenties living in 2007 just sits there and listenning to a 60s country music artist, this should only happen to an old guy or like I said middle aged guy, sitting in his backyard, facing the sun setting —— okay I might be exaggerating here.

Anyway, my point is, besides I enjoy rock 'n roll for most of the times, I also like it to have some relaxing country music once a while. James Taylor is just really good, the way he sings, it just feels so relaxing and so casual. It looks like he doesn't show much passion, never gets too emotional, definitely not a rock star, but I think he rocks in his own way.

So, I'm listenning to country music, and I'm enjoying it.
